What is the difference between an independent agent and those who work for only one company?

Generally speaking, there are two different ways that insurance is sold and serviced:

There are independent agents who represent more than one company. Hoffman & Associates is a group of independent agents. These agents are not employed by any company or carrier. They are local independent agents who represent a number of companies and can tailor coverage from a variety of sources thus offering unique coverage and pricing flexibility, combined with local accountability. We at Hoffman & Associates are independent agents that will work with you and for you to get the coverage you need!

The other type of agent is a direct writer or captive agent who only sells for the one company with which they are exclusively appointed. They can only offer you policies from this one company; they are locked in to this company and their products.
