Teen driver. What discounts could help keep my auto insurance down so I can save some money?

There are several things to consider if you have a teen driver in the house that could help save you money on your auto insurance.

Plan ahead! Let your teen know that if they maintain a 3.0 (B) average or better, and are enrolled full-time in high school, community college or university, a number of auto insurers will offer a discount to reward their hard work! As parents this benefits us in two ways; we are fortunate to have a good student and can use every discount we can get when it comes to having teenagers!

Some companies offer a discount when your teen successfully completes a driving training course. Again, as parents this will benefit us in two ways; one the obvious, your teen takes a training course and two it may qualify you for another discount on your auto premium.

How you choose to insure your teen can affect the cost of your premium. Talk over the following options over with your agent.

Is making your teen an occasional driver on your policy is an option? If the young driver does not have their own car available at all times of the day in some cases being an occasional driver not primary driver may help to lower the cost when adding a teenager to your policy.

Also discuss with your agent the option and benefits of having the teenage driver on their own policy. This could fit your needs better if the teen has their own car, title and registration, mainly for liability reasons.

Then there is the option of having your teen listed as primary on your policy, this will more than likely increase the cost of your auto insurance but may fit your needs of coverage and situation best.

Remember insurers and states will vary in the discounts and coverage offered so be sure to check with your agent to see what is available for your policy and state. As always, your agent should be able to guide you in this decision making process to help make sure you and your teen have the coverage you need!

NOTE: The answers to coverage questions are primarily based on ISO forms generally used in Florida by most companies. However, please keep in mind that all companies forms are NOT necessarily the same. Some companies may provide broader coverage and some may be more restrictive. IN ALL CASES, THE CONSUMER MUST REFER TO HIS OR HER OWN POLICY FOR SPECIFIC COVERAGE INFORMATION.
