Chapter 1:
What are my options when looking for an agent?
We are an independent insurance agency, which means we are considered non-captive agents as opposed to captive agents. Captive agents typically only write policies for the carrier they represent. They will get you their carriers quoted rate, but they do not shop or compare rates with any other companies for you. Some examples of a captive agency would be Allstate and State Farm.
Because we are not captive agents for one carrier, it means that we represent a wide variety of carriers. This allows us to shop multiple companies for you, in order to get you the best possible rate for the coverage you need.
We choose the companies we do represent very carefully, based on their financial situation and industry rating. In the case of homeowners policies, we use only those companies backed by the Florida Insurance Guarantee Association (FIGA). The FIGA was established by the State of Florida to provide homeowners with protection in the event their property and casualty insurance company becomes insolvent or is otherwise unable to pay a valid claim.
We highly recommend searching all of your options and trying both types of agents. Keep in mind that in high risk situations such as coastal areas, older homes, or exposures like dogs and diving boards, you will typically find the agent with the most options will be able to provide you the better premium for your policy. Also, as an independent agency we work for you, not an insurance company.
